The scheduled Light Heavyweight bout between two perennial championship contenders in the Ultimate Fighting Championship or the UFC Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva will no longer be a part of the fight card at UFC 173 where it was put on the co-main event card.
Instead, according to an official announcement by the UFC, the card has been moved to a May 31st event of the UFC in Brazil as the main event. According to reports emerging from within the UFC, the long awaited clash between the Axe Murderer and the American Gangster will be a part of the UFC Fight Night series but it is yet to have a venue or even a host city.
But those minor details as well as the television airing plans will be announced shortly.
Both Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva are currently serving as opposing coaches on the third season of The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil, which is currently being filmed and will fight each other as part of the show’s finale.
Although no reason was given for the move, it is being believed that the UFC wanted to cash in on the immense popularity of the Brazilian and moved the fight to make it a main event clash.
Chael Sonnen is a former contender for the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship, losing to Jon Jones in the title match. He bounced back with a win over Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua, but again suffered another loss at the hands of Rashad Evans. He also failed to beat Anderson Silva in a UFC Middleweight Championship match on two separate occasions.
Wanderlei Silva, on the other hand, has not stepped inside the cage for a year and he will look to take yet another win under his belt after defeating Brian Stann and mark his first streak since 2006.
