Chael Sonnen Biography

Chael Sonnen is a professional mixed martial artist from the United States of America who is currently under contract with the promotional company Ultimate Fighting Championship or the UFC where he is listed as a Middleweight. He has been an All American wrestler in the NCAA Division I when he was studying at the University of Oregon and apart from that, he has also been the University Greco national champion on two occasions and at the Greco Roam World University Championships of 2000 that was held in Tokyo, Japan, Sonnen bagged the Silver Medal in the 85 Kg category. According to the latest rankings released by Sherdog, Sonnen is the 2nd best Middleweight fighter in the world at the moment.

Born on the 3rd of April 1977 in West Linn, Oregon in the United States of America, Sonnen took to martial arts quite early in his career but he always preferred Greco Roman Wrestling and Freestyle Wrestling and his initial trainings were in these two art forms. He also learnt boxing during his wrestling days. His career in mixed martial arts began when he was 19 years old in 1997 and it began with a defeat of Ben Hailey in his very first match. With a perfect record during the first 6 matches of his career, Chael Sonnen was defeated by Trevor Prangley but Sonnen later this loss to Prangley by beating him on UFC Ultimate Fight Night 4. His first match in the UFC was against Renato Sobral, a former Strikeforce as well as IFC Light Heavyweight Champion but this debut match lasted only till the second round when Sonnen submitted to the Triangle Choke of Sobral. Although he won his second fight in the UFC against Prangley, Chael Sonnen lost in his third match against Jeremy Horn. Thus, having a record of 1-2 after three fights, Sonnen was released from his contract by the UFC.

After leaving UFC, Sonnen decided to embark on a new adventure and Bo-Dog provided him just that and after a spell with the company, he soon joined the World Extreme Cage-fighting or the WEC. His stint at WEC was more or less successful and after the dissolution of the WEC Middleweight division, Sonnen moved back to the UFC and since then, he has embarked on a good run in what has been his second coming to the company. Chael Sonnen is a very competitive fighter and although he is yet to win the title, he is still one of the best fighters in the industry.
